Yemen: UN Chief calls for halt to fighting; Security Council holds emergency meeting

The United Nations Secretary General has called for a halt to hostilities in Yemen, as rebel groups took over the presidential palace in what is being described as a coup.

The UN chief's concern over the deteriorating situation comes amid worries that a power vacuum could fuel Al Qaeda activities in the region.

A British jihadist has pleaded guilty to terror offences after faking his death in Syria before attempting to re-enter the UK.

Jury selection begins in case of James Holmes

Jury selection got underway Tuesday in Aurora, Colorado, where 27 year old James Holmes is accused of a shooting rampage in a movie theater in 2012.

The attack left 12 dead and 70 wounded.

Holmes has admitted to the shooting but pled not guilty by reason of insanity.

An initial 9,000 people were selected as potential jurors. The judge announced today, the number has been whittled down to 7,000 - and over the course of the next three to four months, 12 jurors and 12 alternates will be selected.

The complete trial may take up the whole of 2015.

PEGIDA expecting 60,000 for Leipzig demo

The German right-wing group known as PEGIDA has registered 60,000 people for its demonstration in Leipzig after its planned march in Dresden was called off after a death threat.

That would more than double the group's highest turnout so far.

IMF Lowers Global Growth Forecast

The International Monetary Fund has lowered its global growth forecasts for 2015 to 3.5%.

It says expectations for economic performance have fallen for many nations, though U.S. prospects have actually improved.

British jihadi who faked death to return to the UK admits terrorism offenses

A British man who went to fight with jihadists in Syria, faked his death as he wanted to return to Britain undetected.

Death of Argentine prosecutor sparks protests

In Argentina, a special prosecutor who was leading an investigation on the 1994 bombing of a Jewish Center, has been found dead in his apartment in Buenos Aires.

The news prompted thousands of Argentinians to take to the streets in protest, claiming government conspiracy.

Barack Obama prepares to deliver State of the Union

US President Barack Obama is expected to set out an assertive agenda in his annual state of the union address.

Buoyed by improving economic indicators, the American leader will push policies that he feels will help the middle class.

Controversy in the Middle East over Miss Universe "selfie"

A photograph showing both Miss Israel and Miss Lebanon backstage at the Miss Universe competition in Miami, Florida has caused controversy in the Middle East.

Miss Israel Doron Matalon posted a "selfie" online of herself posing with Miss Lebanon, Miss Slovenia, and Miss Japan. 

The photo caused a stir in Lebanon, where the country's contestant Saly Greige has been criticized for posing with Lebanon's political enemy.

As Ruth Marks Eglash, Israel Correspondent for the Washington Post reports, the incident has put Miss Lebanon in hot water back home.

Japanese PM demands immediate release of ISIS hostages


Japan's prime minister is demanding the immediate release of two Japanese men held by ISIS militants.  Shinzo Abe [[ SHEEN-zoh AH-bay ]] said "despicable terrorism can never be forgiven."  

Japan has recently announced 200-million dollars in aid for people in Iraq and Syria who have lost their homes because of the ongoing ISIS campaign in the region.

Yemen descends into chaos

Houthi militants have reportedly stormed the presidential palace in San'aa Yemen, following shots being fired at a U.S. embassy vehicle.

Two Russian artists arrested for throwing holy water on Lenin's mausoleum

Two Russian artists have been arrested after throwing holy water on the mausoleum of former Communist leader Vladimir Lenin in Moscow's Red Square.

UK doctors perform first neonatal transplant

Doctors have performed the first organ transplant from a newborn in the UK.

Page 3 girl dropped from The Sun


Britain's popular tabloid daily newspaper, The Sun, is reported to have stopped featuring it's Page Three pin-up, a picture of a topless woman. 

The Times newspaper, which has the same publisher says its understood the feature ended last week, however pictures of top-less women will continue online.  There's speculation the decision has come from News Corp executive chairmen Rupert Murdoch and has been welcomed by women's rights campaigners.

Observers warn of 'deteriorating' situation in eastern Ukraine

Observers in eastern Ukraine are warning of a serious deterioration in the security situation as fighting flares in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.


The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe says that fighting around Donetsk airport is spreading and that their biggest concern is civilians being caught in the crossfire.

IMF LOWERS GLOBAL GROWTH FORECAST

The International Monetary Fund has cut its global economic growth forecast for this year and 2016.

In October the IMF was predicting the world would see 3.8% growth this year - but it now expects 3.5%.

And it has cut 2016's forecast to 3.7%.

The IMF says the global economic recovery is weakening despite falling oil prices.

It now expects growth of just 1.2% in the euroarea this year.

Danny Cox of stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown says the IMF is notably less optimistic than only a few months ago.
