Taliban militants have celebrated with gunfire after US forces completed their final withdrawal from Afghanistan.

It marks the end of the 20-year US-led operation in the country, and the fortnight-long evacuation effort.

There are concerns about British nationals and Afghan staff left behind in Kabul.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab says the UK is working with neighbouring countries to help them leave.

Historians criticise Indian government's revamp of pre-independence memorial

Japan considering ending Afghanistan evacuation mission Sept. 1

Japan is considering pulling its Self Defence Forces out of Afghanistan, possibly on Wednesday. Government sources cited in Japanese media said it would be difficult to ensure safety at the airport after the US' troops pulled out. 


The US completed the withdrawal of its forces on Monday.

Sweeping Regulatory Changes a Sign of "Profound Change" in China

A prominent nationalist blogger in China says the country's sweeping regulatory changes and crackdown on everything from tutorial centres to celebrity culture are a sign of profound political reform.

Evacuation Orders at Lake Tahoe

Thousands of people along the southern and western shores of Lake Tahoe have been given mandatory evacuation orders because of a forest fire raging nearby.

America's longest war ends as final US military plane departs Kabul

America's longest war is over….after 20 years, there are no US troops or diplomats in Afghanistan.


The final flight out of Hamid Karzai International Airport left 24 hours ahead of President Biden's deadline of August 31st.

There are still questions about how many Americans and the Afghans who assisted them over the last two decades have been left behind.


The Biden administration says it has received assurances from the Taliban that people who want to leave Afghanistan will still be permitted to do so.

American travellers are facing a ban on non-essential journeys to the European Union.

Highway robbers kill UK-based journalist on assignment in Ghana

More than a million homes without power post Hurricane Ida

More than a million homes and businesses are without power across a stretch of Louisiana and Mississippi, after Hurricane Ida (now downgraded to a tropical storm) pummeled the Gulf Coast coastline.

Heavy rains and storm surges amid Category 4 winds knocked out power to the whole city of New Orleans. Hundreds of homes have been threatened by flooding as levees failed, while some roof tops were torn off.
