US President Joe Biden has accused Republicans of planning to hold America's social safety net "hostage" in an effort to advance what he called an extremist political agenda.
He was speaking at the White House, defending his stewardship of the economy as opinion polls show most American voters souring on his handling of inflation.
The President said Americans would face tax rises and ballooning deficits under Republican leadership, and urged voters to stand by Democrat candidates in this November's mid-term elections.
