CATALONIA ELECTIONS 'VICTORY FOR INDEPENDENCE'

Ousted Catalan President Carles Puigdemont says regional elections have seen a victory for the independence movement.

Separatist parties will have a small majority in Catalonia's new assembly, although the largest party wants the region to remain part of Spain.

Elections were called by Spain's central government after what it says was an illegal declaration of independence.

Mr Puigdemont was speaking in Brussels, where he fled after Catalonia's independence referendum - but Catalan MEP Ramon Tremosa says he will return home soon.
