44 killed in Syrian bombing

At least 44 were killed when a huge explosion tore through the Syrian town of Qamishli.

The majority of the residents are ethnic Kurds.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the truck bomb, which was detonated near a Kurdish security headquarters.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby condemned the violence as reprehensible.

IN: "This attack....
OUT: and defeat DAESH."
DUR: 28

NOTE: U.S. officials now tend to use the Arabic word Daesh when referring to the Islamic State organization.
