UN Security Council Votes Against Palestinian Resolution

The United Nations Security Council has voted against a Palestinian-authored resolution that would require Israel to withdraw from occupied territories by the end of 2017.

The United States and Australia voted against, eight nations voted in favour and five abstained.

The vote requires nine to agree, and so the result meant the US did not need to use its veto power to block its passage.

The resolution also called for a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians to be in place within 12 months.
