Winds batter US coastline

Extreme winter weather in the United States is bringing "life threatening conditions" along the country's coastline.


One man has died and several more have been injured by high winds and massive 9-metre waves on the nation's western seafront, whilst tornadoes have struck Texas.

MAN CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER, AFTER WOMAN SET ON FIRE IN NEW YORK SUBWAY

The man accused of killing a woman on the New York subway by setting her on fire, has now been charged with four counts of murder.

It's reported the alleged killer is a Guatemalan citizen who was deported from the United States in 2018, only to return.

NASA: SOLAR PROBE IS 'SAFE'

NASA says its Parker Solar Probe has survived the closest ever approach to the Sun.

The space agency says the craft is safe and operational after passing 3.8 million miles from the solar surface on Christmas Eve.

The mission hopes to provide more understanding of how the Sun works.

Astronomer Professor Mark McCaughrean says it should provide valuable information.

American Airlines flights grounded

American Airlines flights are taking off again after its planes were temporarily grounded across the United States this morning.


The 'groundstop', which lasted roughly an hour, was caused by a "vendor technology issue," but the airline says that it's since been "resolved" and services have resumed.

NASA PROBE APPROACHES SUN

Matt Gaetz ethics report finds evidence he paid for sex with minor

One of Donald Trump's initial picks for a senior cabinet position has violated not only multiple Congressional rules, but several state and federal laws, according to an ethics report published today. 


Matt Gaetz, the firebrand ex-politician, is alleged to have paid a dozen or so women $10,000s "with the general expectation of sex" in return — amongst them an underage student, who was just 17 at the time.


The report also says the former Florida congressman used illegal drugs while in office.

Biden stops death penalty for several criminals

US President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of dozens of people sitting on death row, meaning they will now not face the death penalty. 


These prisoners will instead serve life without the possibility of parole.  


Three notorious killers were left out of these commutations — the gunman at the 2018 shooting at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue, the perpetrator of the 2015 church massacre in Charleston, and the 2013 Boston Marathon bomber.
