Stocks mixed despite China reopening announcement

It was a mixed close on Wall Street Tuesday in the first trading
session since the Christmas holiday.

News of China's plans to reopen its borders did little to boost
sentiment as broader economic fears linger.

Republican George Santos admits to embellishing resume

Judge gives co-defendant in Michigan kidnap plot 16 years in prison

A man convicted of plotting to kidnap the Governor of Michigan has been given a 16 year prison sentence.

Adam Fox was found guilty in August along with another man.

RUSSIA BANS SELLING OIL TO PRICE CAP COUNTRIES

President Vladimir Putin has banned the sale of Russian oil to any nation enforcing a price cap on its exports from February next year.

Earlier in December EU countries, Australia, and the G7 nations agreed to spend no more than 60 US dollars per barrel from Russia.

The scheme is meant to minimise Russian profits while preventing a global price shock. But Russia warned there would be retaliation.

Transport Dept. looking into Southwest flight delays and cancellations

The U.S. Department of Transportation says it is looking into Southwest Airlines massive number of flight cancellations, delays and poor customer service.
The airline experienced far more disruptions to its schedules than other airlines following Friday's bad winter storms.
Thousands of passengers were stranded over Christmas, with issues continuing into the week.

At least 34 dead in New York blizzard

Rohingya asylum seekers dock in Indonesia after drifting in sea for weeks

A boat carrying more than one hundred and eighty Rohingya asylum seekers has been allowed to land some of its passengers in Indonesia after drifting in the sea for weeks.

Taliban ban on women working for NGOs hits relief work in Afghanistan

Several foreign aid groups working in Afghanistan have temporarily suspended work - saying they cannot continue without their female staff.

This after the Taliban banned women from working for non-governmental organisations. The Taliban have accused female workers at foreign aid groups of breaking dress codes by not wearing hijabs.

White House slams Xmas eve migrant buses from Texas

The White House has slammed Texas Governor Gregg Abbott after more than 100 migrants were bussed from the South Western border to Vice President Kamala Harris's DC residence.

The asylum seekers were deposited at the Naval Observatory in the US capital in freezing conditions on Christmas Eve.

US House ends Congress by passing $1.7 trillion funding package

The US House of Representatives passed a $1.7 trillion package on Friday, securing federal funding for the next fiscal year and avoiding a partial government shutdown.

Meta agrees to $750 million settlement over Cambridge Analytica scandal

Facebook's parent company Meta has agreed to pay $725 million to settle a class action lawsuit accusing the platform of allowing third parties to access user data.


The lawsuit stemmed from revelations in 2018 that the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica had improperly obtained and used information about Facebook users.
