UK UNLOCKING UPDATE (MONDAY)

UK MPs will be updated later (Monday) on whether remaining covid-19 restrictions can be lifted from the English economy.

Newly-appointed Health Secretary Sajid Javid will update the Commons on whether England is still on track to fully reopen on July 19th.

He's expected to say an earlier easing for July 5th will not take place.

Covid cases are up nearly 60% week-on-week in the UK, but hospitalisations and deaths remain low due to vaccinations.

Cabinet minister Robert Buckland says the July 19th target looks doable.

Hong Kong police reported to have arrested another former Apple Daily journalist

Florida officials say they'll keep searching for apartment collapse survivors

Officials in the US State of Florida say they'll keep searching for survivors in the rubble of a collapsed apartment building for "as long as they can."

An entire section of the Champlain Towers South in a Miami suburb caved in early on Thursday morning local time.

More than 150 people are still missing and 9 people have been confirmed dead.

Biden orders airstrikes in Iraq and Syria

Chauvin sentenced to 22.5 years for murder of George Floyd

Former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22 and a half years behind bars, for the 2020 murder of George Floyd.

Chauvin sentencing underway

Former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin's sentencing hearing for the murder of African American George Floyd is underway.

Prosecutors are seeking a 30 year sentence, while his defense team want probation and time served.


Chauvin was convicted of multiple charges: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Update: Miami building collapse

At least 159 people are still missing after an apartment building partially collapsed in Surfside, Florida, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Search and rescue crews are working round the clock with dogs and drones in search of any signs of life.


At least four people have died, amid mounting anger over why the 40-year-old building collapsed.
