US slaps sanctions on ISIS affiliates

The US has slapped new sanctions on figures linked to the Islamic State [ISIS] in a bid to deprive them of funding.

The move follows a UN announcement that it is imposing sanctions on several foreign nationals- including four Brits- identified as terrorist fighters.

World leaders speak at Summit on Countering ISIL & Violent Extremism

A day after Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the US of failing to curb ISIL's spread, President Barack Obama has called on the international community to launch a long-term counterterrorism campaign. 

On Monday, Putin said Obama's administration has been ineffective at restricting certain financial backchannels that have funded the extremist organization. 

While hosting the Leaders' Summit on Countering ISIL & Violent Extremism at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday, President Obama stressed that with diplomatic efforts ISIL can be defeated.

Gerry Adams will not face charges over 1972 IRA murder

Northern Ireland's Public Prosecution Service has announced it will not pursue murder charges against Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams in connection with the abduction and killing of a woman by the IRA in 1972.

UK PM softens stance on Syria's future with Assad

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has said Syria's President must go, but admits he could be part of a transitional government. 

It's a softening of the UK's stance in relation to President Bashar al-Assad and the role he should play in the country's future. 

He also said Syria needs to be free of both the Islamic State and Assad, and he would work to convince Syrian allies like Russia that is the only way forward. 

Speaking to CBS, Mr Cameron said long-term Assad must go.

US launches airstrikes after Taliban take key Afghan city

Venezuela will let deported Colombians back in

Venezuela's president, Nicolas Maduro, has agreed to let over 1,500 deported Colombians return to Venezuela, and said the government will legalize their status.

The announcement came after President Maduro met with Union of South American Nations Secretary-General Ernesto Samper, to discuss tensions along the border.

EU holds talks with Volkswagen over emissions scandal

Russia bans Ukraine from its airspace in a tit-for-tat move

UN sanctions are to be extended to four British Islamic State jihadists, at the UK's request.

The four men who are fighting for or recruiting for ISIS in Syria will face travel bans and a freeze of their assets.
