US markets look to build on record gains in the Wall Street preview

After notching up more record gains last week the Dow Jones enters this trading week on a 7 day winning streak.

And as we get closer to the New Year, investors in the United States hope to close for the holiday on a high.

Hackers Attack Xbox and Playstation Online Platforms

Microsoft and Sony are working to restore internet platforms for their Xbox and PlayStation gamer’s consoles.

Attacks disabled the online services on Christmas Day --- one of the busiest gaming days of the year --- making it difficult for users to log on.

Kiev and pro-Russian rebels exchange war prisoners

"The Interview" Seen in Limited Release

The Sony Pictures comedy "The Interview" grossed more than $1 million in limited release at the U.S. box office on Christmas Day. 

Sony had pulled the film from release after major movie chains in the United States reacted to threats made by hackers and said they would not screen it.

But Sony reconsidered after critics said the hacking attack should not be allowed to interfere with freedom of expression.

US Spy Agency Reveals Details of Misuse of Mass Surveillance


The US National Security Agency has been forced to release reports on intelligence collections that may have violated the law or US policy since the end of 2001.

The report includes instances of agents obtaining intelligence on their spouses or girlfriends.

Second round of Ukraine peace talks cancelled

United Nations considers more Darfur withdrawal

The United Nations is considering the withdrawal of a large number of
its peacekeepers from Darfur, according to the New York Times.

New Yorkers honor slain policemen

Memorial services are being held in New York for the two police officers killed on patrol in Brooklyn last weekend.


They were shot by a Baltimore man who said he was avenging the death at the hands of police of Eric Garner earlier this year.


Enormous floral tributes are piling up outside the officers' police station as people pay their respects.

On 10th anniversary, tsunami memorial services held worldwide

Memorial services have been held around the world to mark the tenth anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami that killed more than 200 thousand people. 


The 9.1 magnitude underwater quake lasted around ten seconds and generated tsunami waves of up to 30 meters.


Services took place in Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka.


And globally those caught up in the tsunami have been recounting their experiences.

Archbishop of Canterbury undergoing treatment for pneumonia

No progress at Ukraine peace talks in Minsk

INTRO: A new round of peace talks in Belarus ended without any indication of progress. CDC Reports Possible Ebola Exposure in Atlanta Lab

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is reporting a potential Ebola exposure  because of a laboratory mistake.
The CDC says the error occurred in a high security lab in Atlanta.

US denies IS shot down Jordanian plane

The US says Islamic State militants did not shoot down a Jordanian Air Force jet as the group is claiming.


IS is holding a captured Jordanian airman, and says it shot the plane down with a surface-to-air missile.

Controversial Film "The Interview" to be Released Online

A patchwork of  unconventional distributors has joined an expanding effort to save the controversial film “The Interview.”

Sony says people who want to see the film will be able to do so online.

Missouri authorities urge calm after latest shooting

Authorities in the American state of Missouri are urging protesters there not to seize on the latest police shooting as another incident of racial bias.

A policeman shot and killed 18 year old Antonio Martin after the teenager allegedly threatened the officer with a gun outside a petrol station.
