UK Economy Suffers Unexpected Shrink For Second Consecutive Month

The UK's economy has shrunk by 0.1% in the latest figures for May, contracting for the second month in a row, a surprise after economists broadly predicted a rise in GDP. 

The Office of National Statistics attributes the fall to declining output in the manufacturing and construction sectors. 

This comes as a blow to the Labour government, which has made economic growth a key priority, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves admitting the figure is "disappointing" but says she is "determined to kickstart growth". 

The opposition Conservative Party's Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride criticised the government's economic policy and warned that tax rises are likely to come as a result.
