Jimmy Carter, America's 39th President, has died at the age of 100.
He'd been battling brain cancer, and had entered hospice care over a year ago.
He served just one term in the Oval Office, from 1976 to 1980, and he's widely seen as one of the most liberal politicians ever to hold America's top office.
His career as President was overshadowed by international events including the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
He succeeded in advancing peace in the Middle East….the signing of the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt was a high point of his Presidency.
But he also governed during a tempestuous time for the American economy.

On April 24th, 1980 the United States launched a mission to rescue the hostages held in the US Embassy in Tehran.
It failed when two aircraft collided in mid-air in the Iranian desert, killing 8 American servicemen and one Iranian civilian.
