US Justice Department defends itself against Trump attacks

The United States' Attorney General Merrick Garland has hit out at what he calls an escalation of "dangerous" and "outrageous" attacks on the US Department of Justice.


In a speech on Thursday, he condemned "conspiracy theories, falsehoods, intimidation, and threats of actual violence" against public servants in recent years.

Francine leaves hundreds of thousands without power

A tropical cyclone is ripping through the south of the United States, with tornado and flood watches in place across several US states.


More than three hundred thousand people are without power, as Francine, a hurricane later weakened to a 'tropical depression', continues to cause havoc across the country.

First civillian astronauts complete spacewalk

US inflation cooled in August according to CPI report

US inflation continued to cool last month, according to new figures from the labour department. 


The consumer price index increased 0.2% in August, in line with expectations - with market watchers optimistic a rate cut will be on the cards later this month.
