The head of the Secret Service admits teams failed to protect Trump, as investigations continue

Kimberly Cheatle, Director of the U.S. Secret Service, has been answering tough questions at a congressional hearing, about security failings in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on July 13th -  that lead to the death of one person.

Cheatle had pledged to prevent anything like it from happening again. But many lawmakers appeared unconvinced.

Democrats rally around VP Harris

Democrats are rallying around US Vice President Kamala Harris as she
tries to secure the Democratic Party's nomination.

It comes after President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid on Sunday.

On Monday Illinois Governor JB Pritzker endorsed Harris, as did
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

And West Virginia senator Joe Manchin confirmed he is not planning to
re-register as a Democrat and challenge Harris.

That effectively clears the field of potential challengers.

Other Democrats - including Congressman Joaquin Castro - are rallying
behind her.

Secret Service chief grilled over Trump assassination attempt

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has told a Capitol Hill
committee that the attempted assissation of Donald Trump was the
agency's "most significant operational failure".

She's been grilled by Republican lawmakers about the attack, with
accusations the Secret Service has "become the face of incompetence".

Biden expected to address the nation after dropping out of the 2024 race

Joe Biden is expected to speak to the nation later this week after he announced he was dropping out of the 2024 Presidential race and endorsing his Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a statement Mr Biden said he said the decision was made "in the best interest of my party and the country".
