Prime Minister Modi inaugurates controversial Hindu temple, calls it the beginning of new era for Hindus

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a controversial Hindu temple in a ceremony that was live streamed to millions of households across the country.

Mr Modi described the event as the beginning of a new era for Hindus.

The temple's inauguration fulfils Mr Modi's decade-old election promise of building a temple on the site where a 16th century mosque once stood.

Critics have questioned the the timing calling it a political move aimed at boosting his chances at winning a third term in upcoming national elections.

Priyata Brajabasi brings us this report.
