Stocks slide ahead of debt ceiling vote

U.S. stocks lost ground Wednesday ahead of a vote in Congress that
would take the U.S. a step closer to avoid defaulting on its debt.

And the interest rate debate remains in focus after comments from
several members of the Federal Reserve.

US congressional leaders scramble to pass debt ceiling bill

US Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and US President Joe Biden are scrambling to get enough lawmakers to support the bill they brokered to suspend the debt ceiling and avoid the country's first ever default.

A 218 vote majority is needed to push it through the closely divided House but there's been criticism from far right republicans and progressive democrats.

Uptick in online antisemitism during Tree of Life shooter trial

Jurors have heard calls made to police during the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history.

Debt Ceiling talks in focus on Wall Street

It was a mixed day for U.S. stocks Tuesday as investors wait to see
whether lawmakers can raise the debt ceiling before the country
defaults.

US House Republicans signal they'll vote against debt deal

At least two dozen Republicans say they'll vote against the US debt
ceiling deal agreed between President Joe Biden and House Speaker
Kevin McCarthy.

Conservative lawmakers in the House of Representatives say they'll
oppose the deal when it comes up for vote Wednesday evening, as it
fails to significantly cut government spending.

The Treasury has warned the US will run out of money if the deal is
not passed by June 5th.

France's Macron urges end to plastic pollution at global talks

Climate NGOs say every year, more plastic mounds are fished from city canals and islands of plastic accumulate in the world's oceans. 

Scientists have now also detected particles of microplastics in remote environments, like the Antarctic. 

In a bid to tackle plastic polluters in Paris, legislators are lobbying for internationally legally binding policies on plastic reduction.

On the ground, campaigners are encouraging everyone from homeowners to big businesses to commit to reducing their waste.
