US President Joe Biden says he believes a deal will be reached to raise the country's debt ceiling saying the two sides have made progress - but negotiations continue.
Republicans want to roll back government spending but President Biden and Democrats do not.
The credit rating agency Fitch has put the US on rating watch negative, reflecting the uncertainty around the possibility of a first-ever default.
