US inflation slowing but prices remain high

Inflation in the U.S. has slowed for the tenth month in a row, according to government figures released today.

The consumer price index – which measures the cost of goods and services – shows that April inflation rose 4.9 percent from the same month last year. It was the lowest increase in two years.

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, is warning of "difficult" days ahead, as a pandemic-era policy — used to expel migrants millions of times from the country's southern border — comes to an end.

Title 42 will expire on Thursday, although it's being replaced with a series of measures that the administration hopes will build legal pathways for asylum and fix what it calls a "broken immigration system."

London's top finance bosses fear global competitors are outpacing the City as a lucrative investment destination.

Executives believe it's the red tape and years of underinvestment that has local businesses lagging behind.

Some have also blamed the soaring housing market, lingering effects of the pandemic and the impact the rising costs of living has on low productivity rates.

Likely Impact Of The Trump Ruling?

The fallout is continuing after former US President Donald Trump was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll.

A New York jury in the civil trial ordered him to pay more than $5 million in damages. His lawyers have said he'll appeal.

There are now questions about the effect it could have on Trump's bid for the White House in 2024.

Some Republicans have expressed concern about the impact it could have on his wider appeal, but Sonia Sodha from The Observer newspaper thinks that the damage could be limited:

US on track for most mass killings in recent history

2023 is on track to be the worst in recent history for mass killings in the United States.

New data from the Mass Killing Database show there have been 22 mass killings this year, resulting in at least 115 deaths.

The database defines a mass killing as an event where four or more people, not including the perpetrator, are killed within a 24-hour window.

This comes after a gunman opened fire in a Texas shopping mall on Saturday, leaving at least eight people dead.
