EU Parliament warned "democracy is under attack" amid corruption probe

A case of suspected corruption in the heart of the European Union is sending shockwaves through Brussels.


Belgian prosecutors have charged four people with money laundering and corruption as part of a bribery probe linked to a Gulf country, widely reported to be World Cup host Qatar.


One of those arrested is vice president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili, who has been suspended amid investigations. Kaili is presumed innocent until proven otherwise, and the Qatari government says it "categorically rejects" what it calls "attempts" to associate it with accusations of misconduct.


Prosecutors have uncovered hundreds of thousands of euros in cash at different locations in Brussels since Friday.


In a speech to lawmakers, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said the institution was "under attack," and vowed to beef up transparency measures,

Murdoch faces deposition in Fox News lawsuit
