India's richest man a step closer to acquiring news channel critical of government

Intro:

India's richest man Gautam Adani, who's perceived to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a step closer to acquiring the NDTV News network, amid concerns about press freedom.

NDTV is among the few news outlets in the country that are critical of the government.

Modi calls for Ukraine ceasefire at G20

10,000 Amazon workers to be laid off - NYT

Another round of mass layoffs is expected in the tech sector - this time at Amazon.  


According to a New York Times report, the e-commerce giant plans to axe roughly 10,000 jobs starting as soon as this week, in what would be the largest job cuts in the company's history.

Shooting at University of Virginia; 3 dead

A manhunt is underway in the US state of Virginia after a shooting at a university left three people dead and at least two others injured. 


Gunfire was heard on the Charlottesville campus late on Sunday night — authorities are urging people to remain sheltered in place on Monday whilst the search for the suspects continues.

EU sanctions Iran's Interior Minister and Press TV, accused of human rights violations

The European Union has announced fresh sanctions on dozens of Iranian officials accused of violently repressing protests in the wake of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini's death in custody in September. 


Iran has in the past argued European officials are interfering in internal affairs and says the bloc's accusations toward Tehran are baseless.


Foreign ministers from all 27 EU member states met in Brussels on Monday to greenlight the new blacklist.

EU set to sanction more Iranian officials accused of repressing protesters

European Union Foreign Ministers are expected to greenlight fresh sanctions on dozens of Iranian officials when they meet in Brussels on Monday. 


Last month, the EU blacklisted several Iranians over what the bloc calls "the violent response to recent demonstrations" in the country. Iran accuses the EU of interfering in its internal affairs.

UK AND FRANCE SIGN MIGRANT DEAL

The UK and France have signed a new deal to try to stop small boat crossings in the English Channel.

It'll see the number of patrols on French beaches increased - and British staff based in French control rooms for the first time.

Report: Twitter pauses blue checkmarks after flood of fake accounts

Twitter has reportedly paused offering users blue checkmarks for $8 a month after the site was flooded with fake accounts.

It's the latest drama for Twitter since billionaire Elon Musk completed his purchase of the platform two weeks ago.

Student loan forgiveness applications halted after federal judge blocks the plan

The Biden Administration has stopped accepting student loan forgiveness applications after a federal judge in Texas struck down the program late on Thursday. 


A note on the government website said they are working to “overturn” the orders.


The program, which was first introduced in August, would provide debt relief of up to $20,000.
