Nobel Peace Prize winners announced

A Belarusian human rights campaigner and two human rights organisations have won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Ales Bialiatski, Russian organisation Memorial and Center for Civil Liberties in Ukraine will share this year’s prestigious prize.


The winners were announced on Friday in Oslo, Norway.


The chair of the Nobel Committee said they "demonstrate the significance of civil society for peace and democracy".

US President Joe Biden issues order pardoning all Americans federally convicted of marijuana possession

President Joe Biden has taken his first major steps toward decriminalising marijuana by beginning the process of potentially loosening federal classification of the drug, and calling on Governors to do the same on a state level.


In an Executive Order, he also announced a pardoning of all prior federal possession convictions, a move that would affect thousands of Americans charged with the crime who may have been denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result.

US to screen Ugandan arrivals for Ebola

The United States will start screening passengers arriving from Uganda

At least 37 dead, including 20 children, after gun attack on Thai nursery school

At least 37 people including more than 20 children  have been shot and killed in an attack on  a nursery school in north-east Thailand.


Authorities say a man stormed into the child care centre brandishing a gun and a knife.


He later killed himself at the scene of the attack.

France launches winter energy-saving plan

The French government has laid out its plans to try to reduce energy use, ahead of what could be a difficult winter.
