Buckingham Palace has announced that Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96.


She was Britain's longest serving monarch, working with 15 separate British Prime Ministers and a dozen American Presidents.


Family members were gathered at Balmoral Castle in Scotland where her medical condition took a worsening turn over the last 24 hours.

Elizabeth II the first British monarch to visit Russia

It was 1994 when Queen Elizabeth the Second became the first ruling British monarch to set foot on Russian soil — at the invitation of then President Boris Yeltsin.

Before the fall of the Soviet Union it was seen as inappropriate for the British monarch to visit a communist country.

But the new Russia was at the time keen to strengthen ties with the West.
