EU countries agree gas emergency plan amid fears Russia could turn off taps

European Union member states have agreed to cut gas consumption to save supplies amid fears Russia could turn off the taps this winter.

Twelve EU countries have already seen disruptions to gas deliveries from Russian energy giant gazprom.

Moscow says that's down to Western sanctions, contractual issues and repairs, but Brussels accuses the Kremlin of using energy as a weapon and a means to blackmail the bloc.

Before Russia invaded Ukraine, the EU relied on Moscow for 40% of its natural gas imports. Now it's scrambling to diversify suppliers.

Rosie Birchard is at an emergency meeting of EU energy ministers in Brussels where the deal was struck on Tuesday.

Future UK PM Debate Gets Heated

<Please note mandatory BBC credit and programme name check>

The 2 candidates vying to be the next UK Prime Minister have been laying out their visions, in a head to head televised TV debate.

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are both trying to win the approval of Conservative Party Members to become the new leader… and the person who will take over from outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

But as senior party members urged both sides to concentrate on policy rather than personality, there were fears of a civil war brewing inside the party.

In the BBC debate entitled "Our Next Prime Minister" the two fundamentally disagreed on taxation as a means of boosting the economy... and a heated debate became increasingly combative.
