US President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to suspend federal taxes on petrol in the United States for the next 3 months.

The US government collects 18 cents for every gallon of petrol sold in the US, and President Biden says the move is designed to bring about an immediate lowering of the price at the pumps.

Afghan quake kills at least 1,000 with many more feared trapped in rubble

Authorities in Afghanistan say at least one thousand people have been killed and more than fifteen hundred injured after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the southeast of the country shortly after 1am local time.

Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, and the number of people trapped beneath rubble is unknown.

It's the deadliest quake to strike Afghanistan for two decades, and was felt across India and Pakistan as well.

US "appalled" by Russian threat to execute Americans captured in Ukraine
