UK AND EU TO HOLD TALKS ON NORTHERN IRELAND PROTOCOL

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is holding talks with her European Union counterpart to discuss issues surrounding the Northern Ireland Protocol.

The UK's Attorney General is believed to have approved scrapping parts of the agreement - that was put in place as part of Brexit arrangements - despite warnings from EU officials.

It comes after elections in Northern Ireland saw pro-Unionist party Sinn Féin win the most seats for the first time. The Party wants to unite Northern Ireland with the Republic - rather than remain part of the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the Good Friday Agreement is more important than the Northern Ireland Protocol, amid claims his government is prepared to override parts of it.

Political Editor of the Financial Times, George Parker, believes it could be both a negotiating tactic and an attempt to ensure continued political stability.
