White House: no need for fresh restrictions or lockdowns in USA, despite Omicron

White House officials say there are NO plans for fresh restrictions or lockdowns in the US as the omicron strain spreads across the country.

It's now been identified in at least 36 of America's 50 states, and in some parts of the country including New York and New Jersey it is already responsible for 14% of new Covid-19 infections.

But Jeff Zients (PRON:  ZEYE-NTZ), who heads President Biden's Covid-19 response team, told reporters there is no need for restrictions or any change in public behavior ahead of the Christmas holidays.

England removes Covid-19 travel red list

England's travel red list has been removed.

Now, all fully vaccinated travellers arriving in England will be able to isolate at home instead of so-called 'quarantine hotels'. And if they test negative on a PCR test after two days they will be permitted to leave isolation.

The red list was put in place to slow down the spread of the omicron Covid-19 variant, after its emergence in Southern African countries.

Despite the government's efforts, the variant is now widespread in England with around a third of all cases in London attributed to Omicron.

And because of that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that continuing the red list restrictions didn't make sense anymore.
