US, UK and Canada hit Belarus with new round of sanctions

The US is imposing new sanctions on Belarus, accusing President Alexander Lukashenko of an "ongoing assault" on the "democratic aspirations and human rights of the Belarusian people."

The UK and Canada also announced new measures in a coordinated move.

IPCC: 'CODE RED FOR HUMANITY'

Experts are warning the world's set to hit the global warming limit of a one-point-five degrees Celsius temperature rise in the next 20 years.

A landmark United Nations study says humans are unequivocally driving that, and describes it as 'code red for humanity'.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report says heatwaves, flooding and droughts will be more frequent and intense.

Nigeria's Chibok schoolgirl regains freedom after seven years of kidnap

Authorities in northeast Nigeria have reunited a woman with her family - seven years after she was kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents.

She was one of the schoolgirls abducted in Chibok in 2014.

France's bars and restaurants to start checking Covid-19 health passes

The French government's Covid-19 health pass enters into force from Monday in cafes, restaurants, trains, hospitals, and care homes.

It means that anyone going into these places will have to provide proof that they have either been fully vaccinated, had a recent negative PCR test, or have had Covid-19 recently and have fully recovered.

IPCC REPORT DUE

The 'starkest warning yet' on the climate is contained in the biggest report on the issue in a decade.

The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is releasing its latest study, which takes in more than 14 000 scientific papers.

Environmental campaigners say it's a 'wake-up call' for governments around the world.

Japan braces as Typhoon Lupit makes landfall

Widespread areas of southwest Japan are on high alert against flooding after Typhoon Lupit brought record rainfall to the region.

The storm made landfall on the island of Kyushu on Sunday night, and is now moving north-eastwards across Japan's main island. Thousands have been told to evacuate.

Taliban advance in 3 regional capitals in Afghanistan

The Taliban has made substantial territorial advances in three northern regional capitals just weeks before US troops are due to leave Afghanistan.

It's first conquest in years of a provincial capital came on Friday with the city of Zaranj in the southwestern Nimroz province.

They've also launched attacks on Lashkar Gah in the south and Herat in the west.

The White House has said the drawdown will continue as planned for the end of August.

The US and UK have already advised their citizens to leave the country as the violence between the militant group and Afghan forces gathers pace.

Macron defends health pass after divisive measure gets final approval

France's Constitutional Council has approved the extension of the Covid-19 health pass which proves that a person has been vaccinated or had recently tested negative for coronavirus.

From August 9, the pass will be mandatory at cafes, restaurants, hospitals and on long-distance trains.

Australia – Coronavirus breaking records as protests turn violent
