CRITICAL WORKERS EXEMPT FROM UK ISOLATION RULES

Supermarket staff and workers in other key industries in the UK will no longer be required to self-isolate if they are identified as being a close contact of someone who has tested positive for coronavirus. The decision, announced by the government, is a bid to prevent food shortages in shops. Laura Makin-Isherwood has more.

STUDY: LONGER GAP BETWEEN PFIZER DOSES BENEFICIAL

A study's found an eight-week gap between the first and second doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine produces a stronger immune response against Covid-19 variants.

That's compared to a 4-week interval - where antibody levels appear lower according to the UK study.

Professor Susanna Dunachie ((PRON: dun-er-hee)) is one of the leading researchers who studied hundreds of healthcare workers after they'd been vaccinated.

India shoots down explosive laden drone close to the India-Pakistan border

Sydney - Covid outbreak declared a national emergency

Positive covid cases continue to emerge in Sydney's south and south west, with another 136 people testing positive in the delta cluster.


At least 53 of those cases have been infectious while out in the community, with the hoped for lifting of the lockdown next week now abandoned.

More gains on Wall Street despite weak jobless claims data

Stockpiling concerns amid supermarket staff and food shortages in UK

Supermarkets in the UK are suffering stock shortages after the number of people contacted to self-isolate continues to rise.


More than 600,000 people were told to isolate by the NHS Test and Trace app in the week to the 14th July -- that's the highest recorded number yet.


It means several shelf-stackers and supply chain staff haven't been able to turn up to work, as Emily Kinder reports from London.

RUSSIA TAKES UKRAINE TO EUROPEAN COURT HUMAN RIGHTS

Russia is taking Ukraine to the European Court of Human Rights, over a slew of events that have taken place there since 2014.

Nigerian army arrests 16 terrorists, rescue 12 children in Borno state


Nigerian troops have apprehended 16 suspected members of the terrorist group Boko Haram in Borno state and rescued 12 children who were held in their custody.

It's part of efforts by the government to crack down on the militants who have terrorised the country for more than a decade.

UK supermarket bosses say they're struggling to keep shelves fully stocked because so many staff are self-isolating.

With tens of thousands of covid-19 cases daily - hundreds of thousands of people are being told to isolate because they're close contacts of those who test positive.

Police leaders are warning response times are being affected by staff shortages, and a series of industries are warning of disruption.

Rules on self-isolation for people who've been fully vaccinated will be eased in mid-August and Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng says that's the right decision.

Australia - Infection rates rise as Delta continues to spread

As predicted by Premier Gladys Berejeklian, covid infection rates in the state of New South Wales have increased again, with the state experiencing its worst day since the current delta variant outbreak began.



Up to 87 of the 124 new cases have spent time in the community while infectious, and two aged care homes have now been locked down after a number of unvaccinated workers tested positive.
