UK LOCKDOWN RESTRICTIONS LIFT

Almost all remaining Covid19 restrictions in the UK have been lifted - as part of the next stage of the government's plan to come out of lockdown. Ministers are still urging the public to remain cautious though, as infection rates continue to rise. Laura Makin-Isherwood reports.

CIVILIANS DISPLACED BY CONFLICT

INTRO:

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says a series of attacks by armed groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo have displaced nearly 20,000 in recent months.

The attacks were carried out in North Kivu province where dozens of armed groups have been terrorising communities for decades.

France re-introduces regional curfews as Delta variant of coronavirus spreads

A nightly curfew is being reintroduced in one region in southern France due to the surge of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

Across the country, the number of new infections registered on Sunday/18 July was three times the figure last week and the highest figure for a Sunday since mid-May.

ENGLAND'S ECONOMY UNLOCKS

It's so-called 'Freedom Day' in England, with almost all limits on social contact being lifted.

Measures like social distancing and mask wearing are no longer legal requirements - instead it's down to guidance and personal responsibility.

Nightclubs have reopened for the first time since March last year.

But it comes as the UK registered nearly 50 000 covid-19 cases in the last 24 hour period.

Phones of Indian politicians, journalists hacked using Pegasus

India's Parliament has reconvened for the annual monsoon session and the opposition has accused the government of using an Israeli spyware on journalists and political rivals.

The spyware is allegedly only available to governments but the Indian government has denied any involvement.

China to complete construction for 2022 Winter Olympics by October

China says it will complete construction for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics by October.


Fifty-three of the fifty-seven projects are already finished, and the remaining four will be done in the next few months.

Hong Kong government dismisses US business warning

Landslides kill at least 30 in Mumbai in monsoon rains

Death toll exceeds 100 in Europe floods

DOZENS DIE IN EUROPE FLOODING
