DEBATE OVER UK UNLOCKING AS INDIA VARIANT SPREADS

Several scientists advising the UK government say a planned further easing of restrictions this month should be delayed because of the spread of the India-discovered covid variant.

3000 coronavirus cases have now been reported for six days in a row.

However, many Conservative MPs say the country's vaccine rollout means unlocking the economy should go ahead on June 21st because hospitalisations and fatalities remain low.

Business minister Paul Scully says covid-19 is not currently overwhelming hospitals.
