UK AND INDIA STRIKE TRADE DEAL

A trade deal worth around 1 point 4 billion dollars has been struck between India and the United Kingdom. Downing Street says it will create more than 6,000 jobs in the UK. Export deals have also been secured. Laura Makin-Isherwood has more.

G7 in-person summit in London: Australia, India, South Korea and South Africa also attending

Foreign ministers from the G7 countries are convening in London for their first face-to-face meeting in more than two years.


Representatives from the world's leading economies are expected to discuss the "shared challenges and rising threats" to health and democracy.

CONGO TO IMPOSE MILITARY RULE IN TROUBLED EAST

INTRO:

The Democratic Republic of Congo has imposed martial law in two provinces in the east of the country following a rise in the killing of civilians there.

The move will see all civilian authorities in Ituri and North Kivu provinces be replaced by police and military officers for a period of 30 days. 
The announcement was made by the DRC President's spokesperson on Monday evening. CGTN's Chris Ocamringa reports from Kinshasa.

Vaccine privileges plan divides opinion in Germany

The German Government is preparing to give special privileges to those who have been vaccinated against Covid-19. 

Under plans being drafted by the Health Minister, people who have received their jab could be allowed to meet up together and skip public testing requirements. But some critics say the plans will likely anger young people, who are still months away from being invited to receive their vaccine.

UK AND INDIA ANNOUNCE TRADE DEALS

The UK and India have announced trade and investment deals worth £1bn ($1.39bn).

It comes as Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Narendra Modi hold a virtual bilateral meeting.

Mr Johnson was due to visit India last month but postponed the trip because of the country's Covid-19 crisis.

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss says the new deals will create around 6000 jobs in the UK - but insists there is more progress to be made.

India's COVID19 tally crosses 20 million mark

India recorded more than 357,000 cases and nearly 3450 deaths in the last 24 hours. Experts say the second wave is expected to peak in another two to three weeks.

As hospitals across the country continue to struggle with oxygen shortages more than a week in, many are calling on Prime Minister Modi to impose a nationwide lockdown.

Moderna to Supply Doses to COVAX

Andrew Brown Jr's funeral held in Elizabeth City, North Carolina


Attorneys for the family of Andrew Brown Jr once again called for bodycam footage of his shooting to be made public as his funeral service was held in North Carolina.


The 42-year-old black man was shot dead by sheriff's deputies last month.

EU Commission presents plans to allow international travel to resume from June

The European Union's executive arm has proposed easing restrictions on international travel for tourists who've been fully vaccinated, or who are travelling from countries with low-levels of infection. 

The new system would replace the blanket ban on non-essential travel, in place for more than a year. 

The European Commission hopes the plans could be adopted by EU member states later this month.

France re-opens high schools as Covid-19 restrictions continue to ease

Secondary-school pupils in France are going back to class today/on Monday after an extended coronavirus schools closure which began in late March.

The move is the second stage of five planned steps from the government to ease the current Covid-19 restrictions over the next two months.
