ALL OVER 70s IN WALES VACCINATED 'WITHIN HOURS'

Wales will be the first UK country to vaccinate all of its most vulnerable says its First Minister Mark Drakeford.


The UK has set itself a target to give the first dose of coronavirus vaccine to all 15 million people in the top four vulnerability brackets by February 15.

DRC EBOLA CASES RISE

INTRO:

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have detected a third case of Ebola in the eastern province of North Kivu.
The new case comes a week after the first patient who tested positive for Ebola died near  the city of Butembo. The resurgence of Ebola in the region is a big setback to the country that declared the end of a previous outbreak last year.

Avian Influenza "Bird flu' detected again in Nigeria


The Nigerian government has confirmed the resurgence of Avian Influenza commonly called bird fly which is a highly contagious viral infection of birds in the country.

Nigeria was the first country in Africa to detect bird flu, in 2006 and 2007.

China's CGTN banned from broadcasting in Germany

Germany's media regulator has followed its British counterpart in banning China's CGTN news service from broadcasting on local television providers. 

Some German viewers have reported the channel has already been removed from local cable services.

Trump lawyers to state their case in speedy defense

Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers are presenting their case [later Friday] against Democratic lawmakers’ claims that he was personally responsible for inciting the mob that stormed Congress on January 6th.

The second impeachment trial of the former president has dominated Washington this week, but proceedings may wrap up quickly with a vote expected as early as Saturday.

Explosion at firecracker factory in south India, at least 11 dead

UK GDP experiences worst slump ever

UK GDP had its worst annual slump on record, falling by 9.9% in 2020 according to the Office for National Statistics.


However, growth in December, as coronavirus restrictions were loosened, could mean the economy avoids a so-called double-dip recession.

UK QUARANTINE HOTEL BOOKING SYSTEM REMAINS OFFLINE

The hotel booking system UK citizens must use to reserve government-imposed quarantine stays still isn't operating. 


The portal - which went offline soon after launching - is the only way arrivals from thirty-three countries can book accommodation required under regulations that come into force on Monday. The UK government says it's a 'technical issue'.

Indian state asks to halt the country's homegrown vaccine till trials are complete

A state in India has asked the federal government to halt the supply of Covaxin, which is India's indigenous COVID 19 vaccine.

Covaxin is still undergoing its third phase of clinical trials, but the Indian government authorised it for use in the country's COVID 19 inoculation drive.

Germany to introduce border checks for Austria and Czech Republic

Manned checkpoints will be set up on Germany's border this weekend to help slow the spread of new Covid-19 variants.

UK ECONOMY SLUMPS MOST ON RECORD

The UK economy shrank 9.9% in 2020 - the biggest slump on record.

However, there was GDP growth in the final quarter of the year, which means the UK may avoid a double-dip recession.

Ugandan Military Pilot Dies in Helicopter Crash
