DRC ARMY TENSION


INTRO:

The Spokesperson of the Congolese army has dismissed talk of a planned coup by government soldiers. General Leon Kasonga says the army is a disciplined force that can't destabilise the country. Allegations about a revolt have been doing the rounds on social media following the government's delay in paying the soldiers salaries.

MOLDOVAN OPPOSITION CANDIDATE WINS ELECTION

Moldovan presidential candidate, Maya Sandu, has won the race for president, against current leader Igor Dodon.

In the second round of voting, the pro-EU candidate won nearly 58 percent of the vote, while the Kremlin-backed incumbent secured only 42%.

Moldova used to be part of the Soviet Union.

It's now one of the poorest countries in Europe,

UK BEGINS NEW VACCINE TRIAL

A major covid-19 vaccine trial has launched in the UK.

Thousands of people will be involved in testing the jab from Belgian company Janssen.

It uses a genetically modified cold virus to stimulate the immune system.

The UK is backing several vaccine candidates in the expectation that a number of them will be needed to bring coronavirus under control.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock says the aim remains to be using a Pfizer vaccine within weeks.

Japan’s economy rebounds from record slump

Japan's economy grew an annualized 21.4% in the third quarter, making its biggest jump in 40 years, according to government officials. It comes after a record post-war slump amid fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. But analysts say the overall economy has a long way to go before it's fully back on track - and is still far from pre-pandemic levels. Grace Lee has more.

Hong Kong Police investigate city's deadliest fire in almost a decade

Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam is calling for a full investigation, after the city's deadliest fire in almost a decade.

Seven people, including a nine-year-old child, were killed when a fire broke out in a flat on Sunday night. 

Seven more are in a critical condition in hospital.

S. Korea joins 14 countries in signing world's largest FTA

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership with the leaders of 14 other countries, including China and Japan. The deal creates a free-trade bloc with a combined GDP of about 26 trillion U.S. dollars.

SpaceX Nasa Dragon Capsule en route to the ISS

A historic Space X Nasa mission to the International Space Station has taken off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

 

Four astronauts are on board the Dragon capsule in its first fully operational flight by SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer founded by Elon Musk.

Dominic Cummings leaves Downing Street following days of political turmoil

Dominic Cummings, senior advisor to the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has left Downing Street with immediate effect, according to Number 10 sources. 

 

He was expected to leave by Christmas, but after a week of political infighting, he departed for good on Friday night.

No evidence of electoral fraud, say U.S. election officials- China congratulates Biden

There is no evidence of electoral fraud in the 2020 US presidential election- that’s the word from election officials, who insist the vote was the most secure in American history.


Refuting President Donald Trump’s version of events, the election committee concluded the voting system was not compromised in any way.

Serial killer Peter Sutcliffe -- The Yorkshire Ripper -- dies aged 74

EBOLA OUTBREAK NEARS END
