The UK's local authorities will be granted special powers for local lockdowns to tackle coronavirus infection.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johson, hopes the broad powers mean smaller lockdowns can be initiated faster - and more precisely - in high infection areas.

India's Defence Minister Visits Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh

EXTRA FUNDING FOR NHS AHEAD OF POSSIBLE SECOND WAVE

The UK's National Health Service is being allocated an extra $3.75bn in funding to prepare for a possible second wave of coronavirus

The government is warning the NHS needs to be prepared for a spike in infections during the winter.

One report commissioned by UK officials suggested hospitals in Britain could see 120 000 deaths over the winter period.

India's coronavirus cases surge to more than one million

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in India has crossed the one million mark.

It's the third worst-affected country globally in terms of numbers.

Figures from the country's health ministry released on Friday revealed another record daily increase of almost 35,000 cases.

Confirmed US Covid-19 Cases top 3.5 million

Call for Elections to End South Sudan Crisis
