U.S. jobless claims top 26m in 5 weeks

The latest U.S. unemployment data shows another 4.4 million people
have filed jobless claims in the last week.

It brings the total number of workers who have lost their jobs in the
last 5 weeks to over 26 million.

France medical body calls for compulsory face masks for public

The National Academy of Medicine says that the wearing of face masks should be made compulsory in France immediately.


France is considering only bringing in the obligatory wearing of face masks after the current end date for the strict lockdown, which is 11 May.

UK LAUNCHES COVID-19 TRACKING STUDY AND HUMAN VACCINE TRIALS

A study to track Covid-19 infection and immunity rates in England has been launched. 

The study, which is the largest ever of its kind, will initially target 20,000 households. 
It comes as the first human clinical trials for a vaccine get underway in the UK.

Total Acquires Tullow Entire Interests in Uganda Oil

Intro;

French Oil firm Total has acquired the British Oil company – Tullow's entire interests in Uganda's Lake Albert Project

 

Under the terms of the deal, Total will acquire all of Tullow's existing 33.33% stake in each of the project licenses and the proposed East African Crude Oil Pipeline System.

UK PM BACK AT WORK 'SOON'

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson should be back at work 'soon', according to one of his colleagues.

There's still no date for his full return to Prime Ministerial duties, however, after his period in intensive care with coronavirus.

Mr Johnson was hospitalised earlier this month and said his life had been saved by staff at St Thomas's hospital in London.

Cabinet member Brandon Lewis says he's gradually taking on more and more, but won't rush his return.

China Slams Missouri Lawsuit

China has slammed a lawsuit filed by the US state of Missouri over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

Spain reports second daily increase in death toll this week

Spain has reported a slight increase in the death toll for the second day running, with another 435 in the last 24 hours. 

That brings the total to nearly 22,000.

Spain has suffered the third-highest number of deaths in the world after the US and Italy.

Over 40 Killed in DR Congo Floods

Confusion over whether UK decided not to take part in EU corornavirus scheme

The UK government is facing fresh questions over the time it took to join an EU scheme to source key medical equipment.

Tanzania: French Embassy Directs €500,000 to Epidemic Prevention

This was revealed in a statement issued yesterday by French Ambassador to Tanzania Frederic Clavier. He said the French Agency for Development (AFD) is working together with the government and various NGOs to assess the possibility of rerouting some available grant funds of about €500,000 towards actions of prevention, training of health workers, and supply of medical materials.
