UK GOVT UNDER PRESSURE OVER LOCKDOWN EXIT

The UK government is under pressure to publish details of its exit strategy from lockdown this week.

Britain is expected to announce on Thursday that it's extending its current lockdown restrictions.

Ministers haven't wanted to publicly discuss how and when they'll be eased, in case it causes complacency in compliance with the rules.

But opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer says people need to know that plans are taking shape.

A woman in Australia's capital Canberra has died from coronavirus - bringing the death toll for the nation to 63.

UK ECONOMY TO SUFFER WORST DROP "IN LIVING MEMORY"

IMF: World facing worst recession since 1930s

The International Monetary Fund is predicting the global economy will

Public Health England failed to quickly increase coronavirus testing, says UK's Chief Scientific Advisor

The British government's Chief Scientific Advisor has admitted that coronavirus testing in the UK should have been ramped up more quickly.

 

Sir Patrick Vallance said at the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak, testing was "at the right level," but it was then "not scaled as fast as it needed to be."

France extends lockdown for another month to May 11

France has extended its lockdown for another month until May 11 as the country continues to deal with a growing number of fatalities from the coronavirus pandemic.

President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement in his latest address to the nation.

European countries begin to loosen lockdown measures

Italy and Austria are taking tentative steps to relax lockdown measures this week, with some shops including bookshops, DIY stores and garden centres allowed to reopen. 

Schools and nurseries are allowed to reopen in Denmark, one of the first countries to impose strict lockdown measures. 

France has extended its lockdown until May 11th.
