Senate takes control of Trump Impeachment trial

The senate trial of Donald Trump moved closer on Thursday as the upper chamber took control of  two articles of impeachment against the U.S. President.

The chief justice of the Supreme Court, John Roberts, will also be sworn in Thursday before presiding over the trial due to begin early next week

350,000 Syrians flee fighting around Idlib

U.S. Virgin Islands Files Lawsuit Against Estate of Jeffrey Epstein


The U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General has filed a lawsuit against the estate of Jeffrey Epstein, in a move that broadens the scope of his sexual trafficking by more than a decade. 

This is the first time a government has sued the disgraced former financier's estate, estimated to be worth more than $500 million.

Ethiopia / Egypt Dam raw

A meeting in Washington DC between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan over Ethiopia's construction  of a dam on the Nile River has ended without a comprehensive agreement.

The parties are due to meet again later this month to finalize an agreement.

Egypt has opposed the Grand Renaissance dam over concerns about its water supply. 

The United States and the World Bank have been attending the meeting as observers.

African leaders meet to stop the circulation of fake drugs in the continent


African presidents from seven countries are expected to meet in the Togolese capital, Lome, from Jan 17th to 18th to discuss measures to deal with increasing level of trade in counterfeit medicines in Africa.

Tanzania's government plans to block all unregistered mobile phone SIM cards by Jan. 20.

The cutoff deadline was imposed to force millions of Tanzanian mobile phone users who were slow or had missed earlier deadlines to register. Tanzania's communication authorities say as of Jan. 5, just over half the country's 44 million SIM cards had been registered.

Opposition parties protest against Ghana’s new voters’ register.

Ghana heads to the polls in December to elect a president and members of parliament. With just 10 months to the elections, the electoral commission says the country needs a new voters' roll because the one available currently is no longer fit for purpose. Muted reaction from EU to US China trade deal agreement

The French president Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that he hoped a new trade agreement between China and the United States would not lead to new tensions between the US and the EU. 

As part of the Phase 1 deal, China has agreed to buy $200 billion of US products over the next two years. 

But tensions remain between Washington and the EU remain, with President Trump having threatened to impose further sanctions on EU goods.

Trafficked Ugandan Girls Rescued in Kenya

A joint force of Kenya and Uganda security have rescued 91 Ugandan girls who had allegedly been trafficked from Uganda.

Detectives in Uganda say they are not sure where the girls were destined but there are possibilities some could find their way to Al Shabaab camps.

The operation was carried out in the suburbs of Shauri Moyo of Nairobi, known to be occupied by Somalia communities.

Prince Harry carrying out first public engagement since royal 'crisis'

Prince Harry is parkating in his first public engagement since unveiling plans that he and his wife Meghan will be stepping back as senior royals.


The Duke of Sussex is hosting the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draw at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, where he's meeting with representatives from all 21 nations participating.


He will then remain in the UK into next week, despite rumours he was preparing to fly to Canada to join Meghan and their eight-month-old son Archie.

FILMING TO BE ALLOWED IN UK COURTS

TV cameras will be allowed to film in some UK courts under new proposals.

The government is proposing legislation so judges' sentencing remarks can be filmed in courts in England and Wales during high-profile criminal cases.

India to launch mass outreach program in Kashmir

Facing criticism for a five-month long internet shutdown in Kashmir, the longest in the world, the Indian government plans to launch a massive public outreach program in the region.

India has faced criticism from many countries, including the US and the UK, over restrictions in Kashmir that have impacted daily life.

In August last year, India revoked the region's special status and brought it under New Delhi's direct control.

US and China sign phase one trade deal

The US and China have signed an agreement as a first step aimed at easing the trade war between the two countries.

Speaking at the White House US President Donald Trump hailed the deal as "historic". In a letter, Chinese president Xi Jinping said it was a win-win.

The phase one agreement rolls back US tariffs on Chinese goods in return for China buying more U.S. products and strengthening intellectual property rules.

But many major issues remain unresolved with fresh talks on a Phase Two deal yet to be tabled.

Trump Attacks Apple on Privacy
