French PM holds talks with unions as pensions strikes hits oil refineries

The French prime minister is holding talks with leaders from trade unions to try to find a breakthrough to the strikes over pension reform.

The dialogue comes as a new four-day nationwide strike in French oil refineries gets under way.

France and the US set 15 day deadline to resolve digital tax dispute

The French finance minister says France and the US have given themselves 15 days to resolve a trade dispute over France's digital tax.

The US has threatened 2.4 billion dollars of retaliatory tariffs on French wines, leather goods, cheeses and makeup if the tax is not scrapped.

British teenager sentenced over false rape claim in Cyprus

A British teenager detained in a Cypriot prison over a false rape claim is now free to return home to the UK after being handed a four-month suspended sentence. 


The 19-year-old was convicted following a trial having recanting an allegation that she was raped in a hotel room by a dozen young Israeli men in July.

At least 30 killed in a bomb blast in Borno, northeast Nigeria


Reports say at least 30 people have been killed and many more injured in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, after an improvised explosive device detonated on a bridge leading to the border with Cameroon.

Delhi Police looks into the JNU attack after criticism

Police in New Delhi have initiated a probe into the attack on one of India's top universities on Sunday.

More than thirty students and teachers were injured when a masked mob armed with sticks and iron rods entered one of its campuses.

Two Australians will be behind bars for up a year in Bali after they were found guilty of cocaine possession.

US military presence in Iraq in question amid confusion over a letter

US Defence Secretary Mark Esper has denied US troops are pulling out of Iraq, after a letter from a US general there suggested a withdrawal.

The confusion came amid threats to American forces after the US killed top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.

UPDATE: Despite letter to Iraq, US Defense Secretary denies troop withdrawal preparations are about to begin

The Pentagon is now denying that the US has any plans to withdraw its forces from Iraq, despite a letter sent to the Iraqi Defense Ministry by a top US Army official who said preparations for the withdrawal are about to get underway.


Defense Secretary Mark Esper says "no decision" on the pull-out of forces has yet been taken, after the Iraqi Parliament ordered their expulsion.

Pentagon tells Iraq that US will prepare troops for withdrawal from country

The US has told the Iraqi military that it WILL go ahead and prepare for the withdrawal of withdraw five thousand US troops stationed in the country.


The Iraqi Parliament voted over the weekend for the expulsion of all foreign forces based in the country, including around fifteen hundred British troops.

Weinstein trial begins in New York

Iran, mourners vow revenge for Soleimani killing

Britain’s “most prolific rapist” jailed for life

A serial sexual predator convicted of 159 sex offences, including 136 rapes, has been jailed for life. 


Reynhard Sinaga, aged 36, was found guilty of luring dozens men to his apartment from outside clubs in the UK city of Manchester, before drugging and assaulting them, and filming the attacks.
