In New Zealand, the military has been drafted in to assist in the recovery of bodies on White Island in the Bay of Plenty despite seerious concerns about the volatility of th volcano.

Hungary passes new culture law, critics claim gov't crushing artistic freedom

Israeli woman appeals Russian drug smuggling charges

A Moscow court will hear the appeal of a 26-year-old Israeli woman who was convicted of drug smuggling while passing through Russia. She was sentenced in October to seven and a half years behind bars and could be sent to a Russian penal colony. Julia Chapman reports from Moscow.

Congress debates articles of impeachment

US lawmakers held a rare evening session on Wednesday as the House Judiciary Committee worked towards voting on articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

Democrats hope to vote to impeach the president next week. A trial in the Republican-controlled Senate on whether to remove him from office is expected to follow in January.

U.S. Federal Reserve keeps interest rates steady


The U.S. Federal Reserve is holding rates steady, leaving its benchmark lending rate at 1.5 to 1.75 percent after its final policy meeting of 2019.

Russia to file lawsuits at Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge ban over doping

Russia says it will file lawsuits with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge the wide-ranging sanctions imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Saudi nationals no-fly in US following mass shooting
