US sanctions Iranian FM Javad Zarif


The United States has followed through on its threat to sanction Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in a move likely to escalate ongoing tensions between Washington DC and Tehran. 


The US Treasury Department announce the decision late Wednesday.

Son of bin Laden Reported Dead

US officials have confirmed a son of Osama bin Laden is dead.

Hamza bin Laden had been groomed to take the reins of Al Qaeda after his father's death, and his whereabouts had been unknown for years.

US Fed cuts rates for first time in decade

The US Federal Reserve has cut interest rates by a quarter percent for
the first time in a decade.

The decision was expected and comes after repeated attacks from
President Donald Trump for the Fed to reduce rates to help the
economy.

IGAD meeting on South Sudan postponed

Intro 

South Sudan's' president Salva Kirr has postponed a trip to Ethiopia where he was expected to meet opposition leader Riek Machar.


The Intergovernmental Authority for Development, who has mediated the country's peace process since 2013, brokered the talks to try and overcome differences between the two sides in advance of the planned transitional government in November.

Five EU countries agree to house rescued migrants stuck on Italian ship

A number of EU countries have agreed to take in 116 migrants who had been stuck on an Italian Coastguard ship which rescued them.

Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said he wouldn't allow the boat to dock unless other EU countries took them in.

UK PM Boris Johnson in Northern Ireland for talks

Britain's new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is in Northern Ireland for discussions on restoring the country's power-sharing government.


Northern Ireland has been without a government for two and a half years after splits between the two biggest parties.


While Johnson insists his priority is to get the government up and running, its expected that the topic of Brexit will also be discussed.

Police accused of responsibility after partygoer drowns in France

A new scandal over police violence is dominating headlines in France after the body of a young man was found in the River Loire in Nantes.

Steve Maia Caniço drowned after police broke up a party on the riverbank with tear gas in June; a police report says officers weren't responsible for his fall into the river, but his family's lawyer says a lot of questions remain unanswered.

Indian coffee tycoon's body found

Thirty six hours after he went missing, the body of the founder of India's largest coffee chain has been fished out of a river in Southern India.

India criminalises Muslim 'instant' divorce

India's Parliament has adopted a bill that bans the Muslim practice of instant divorce, or triple talaq. The Arabic word "talaq", when expressed three times, allows Muslim men to obtain irrevocable separation from their partner.

Democrats vying to challenge U.S. President Donald Trump in the 2020

North Korea fire projectiles off east coast

South Korean military officials say North Korea has fired a number of
unidentified projectiles off its east coast.

This comes less than a week after Pyongyang fired two short-range
ballistic missiles.

South Korea says it's maintaining a readiness posture and is
monitoring the situation.

The Trump administration didn't immediately comment but hopes have
been growing in Washington that stalled denuclearization negotiations

California Election Law Requires Trump to Submit Tax Returns

UN: More Afghans killed by allies than militants

The United Nations says almost 4,000 civilians were killed or wounded
in Afghanistan in the first half of 2019, mostly by pro-government

Ethiopia cautious over Ebola Spread

Ethiopia has deployed several hundred medical officers across the
country to prevent the spread of Ebola which is moving through parts
of eastern Africa.

The preventive measures come as the World Health Organization raises
an alert on the disease which has killed more than 1700 people in the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
