It stemmed from leaked emails in which the ambassador called the Trump administration inept and dysfunctional.
Sir Kim Darroch was due to end his term as ambassador at the end of the year, but in a statement he announced that the current situation was making it impossible for him to carry out his role.
Donald Trump took to twitter following the release of the leaked memos, saying the US would not work with Sir Kim and calling him 'wacky' and 'a very stupid guy'.
The UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, had given her full support to the ambassador and expressed her deep regret that he has stepped down.

France admits its missiles found in Libya

The UN Refugee Agency - UNHCR is appealing to South Sudan leaders to speed up efforts to end what has become Africa's largest displacement crisis.
