Key holidays in North Korea are sometimes marked with a massive military parade, or even the test of a weapon.

But, according to AFP, the Day of the Sun brought mostly teary tributes.

The news agency says ten of thousands of citizens paid their respects and laid flowers before the statues of Kim Il-sung and his son, Kim Jong-il.

The late founder's grandson and current ruler, Kim Jong-un, has signaled he wants to continue nuclear talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Avoiding any boast of military might may also be sign Kim is trying to keep the mood peaceful for another summit with the U.S. president.
