Korean Air says Cho died at a hospital in Los Angeles.
The airline didn't give any other details about the 70-year-old chairman's death.
Recently Cho's leadership had been overshadowed by legal troubles.
He was on trial for corruption.
But it was family scandals that dominated headlines.
In 2014, one of his daughters was arrested for forcing a Korean Air flight to return to its gate after she was served nuts in a bag… and not on a plate.
The infamous incident became known as 'nut rage.'

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in Moscow for talks with the Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The meeting falls just days after the United States said it would halt delivery of fighter jets to Turkey, because of Turkey's plan to buy a Russian missile system.
