UK EXTENDS DIPLOMATIC PROTECTION TO JAILED BRITISH WOMAN

The UK is extending diplomatic protection to a British-Iranian woman imprisoned in Iran.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was jailed in Iran for five years in 2016 on spying charges she denies.

London's move on diplomatic protection means her case will become a legal dispute between Britain and Tehran.

Iran says the decision 'contravenes international law'.

Retired British diplomat Peter Ricketts says it gives the UK more options to escalate the case with the international community.

Indian court orders mediation in decades old Ayodhya dispute

India's Supreme Court has ordered mediation in the Ayodhya land dispute.

A three-member panel has been appointed, and the mediation process will be court monitored.

For decades, Hindu and Muslim groups have fought over the control of the site and the right to offer prayers there.

In 1992 a Hindu mob destroyed a 16th century mosque on the site, leading to riots in which 2000 people were killed.

North Korean state media says the drills violate agreements Pyongyang has with the U.S. and South Korea.

The allies hold annual spring war games that involve thousands of troops.

But the current week-long exercise is much smaller than previous years.

President Trump agreed to shrink the military drills apparently to keep room open for talks with North Korea.

He's also said the drills are too expensive.

Pyongyang has always criticized the drills as a threat of invasion.

Seoul responded to the North, saying the new drills are only defensive in nature.

According to a local paper, intelligence officials briefed South Korean lawmakers about the activity this week.

The JoongAng Ilbo reports there was movement of supply transport vehicles at a missile research site.

The research area, known as Sanumdong, is believed to be where North Korea produced an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Lawmakers first revealed details of the intelligence report on Tuesday.

Evidence suggests North Korea is also still processing fuel for nuclear weapons and rebuilding a rocket launch site.

The news comes after President Trump and Kim Jong-un failed to reach a deal on denuclearization at their second summit.

U.S. think tanks have said, however, satellite imagery shows activity taking place long before the summit.
