British MPs set to approve motion allowing pregnant MPs to vote by proxy

British MPs are expected to approve a motion on proxy voting today (Monday at 1430GMT) which would mean pregnant or new parent MPs would not have to attend important votes in person.


It comes after a female MP recently postponed having a cesarian section to cast her ballot on a crucial Brexit vote.


But while the move is a step in the right direction, the spokesperson for the Women's Equality Party, Harini Iyengar (Har-in-ee Eye-en-gar), says there's still a lot of work to be done.

Protests over Indian government's controversial citizenship bill

The north-eastern state of Assam is witnessing violent protests against the Indian government's proposal to amend the country's citizenship laws.

Prime Minister Modi's right-wing, Hindu majority government is proposing to grant citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from its neighbouring countries.

Calls grow in France to ban rubber bullets after Yellow Vests injured

Calls are growing in France to ban rubber bullets used by police - known as flash balls - after a well known figure in the Yellow Vests movement was hit in the eye by one on Saturday.

Russia denies helping protect Maduro

A Kremlin spokesman has rejected reports that Russian mercenaries were sent to Venezuela to protect Nicolas Maduro.

It comes as the Venezuelan president faces a growing protest movement and an opposition politician declared himself the country's leader.

N. Korea calls on S. Korea to halt military drills


North Korea has demanded that South Korea halt some military drills. The North's official newspaper said the drills could damage negotiations and the Korean Peninsula's current peaceful mood.

North Korea's Rodong Sinmun called the drills 'dangerous military action.'

The state-run paper said they run counter to inter-Korean reconciliation, peace and stability.

The paper singled out South Korea's recent anti-terrorism drill and winter military drills.

It also criticized Seoul for plans to expand its military budget.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has stressed the importance of enhancing defense capabilities at home.

But Seoul and Washington have delayed major joint drills to appease North Korea.

U.S. set to return asylum-seekers to Mexico

U.S officials are set to send a group of asylum-seekers back to Mexico, instructing them to wait there while their claims are processed in the U.S. 

This is part of a new set of Trump administration protocols that mark a dramatic shift from longstanding practice of allowing asylum-seekers to stay in the U.S. until final rulings about their cases.

Trump ends shutdown, handing big victory to Democrats

President Trump says he's agreed to end the US government shutdown for the next three weeks, while he tries to secure Congressional support for the construction of a wall along the US border with Mexico.


The President made the announcement on the 35th day of the US government shutdown that has left more than 800 thousand federal workers without pay.

Pompeo to meet with UN Security Council Saturday on Venezuela crisis

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is heading to the United Nations Saturday to canvas for international support for Venezuela's interim president Juan Guaido.

UN meet on climate change and its threat to peace and security

The United Nations Security Council has held its first open debate on
the subject of climate change since 2011.
