Mays says European leaders share determination to clarify Irish backstop

British Prime Minister Theresa May says there is a shared determination among European leaders to find an acceptable compromise on the Irish border issue which is currently scuppering her proposed Brexit deal.

In a dash across Europe to see leaders from the Netherlands, Germany and EU officials, Mrs May said she was beginning a negotiating process to clarify the controversial position which could see Northern Ireland treated differently from the rest of the the UK to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.  This would come into force if London and Brussels fail to negotiate a trade agreement in the time available.

It comes as Mrs May faces a fierce backlash for postponing a parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal with speculation opponents within her own Conservative party have the numbers to challenge her leadership.

However speaking in Brussels Theresa May said she was making progress on clarifying the backstop issue.

U.S. sanctions three senior N. Korean officials

The United States has imposed sanctions on three North Korean officials. Washington says it's sanctioning the men over North Korea's censorship and human rights abuses.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the sanctions demonstrate ongoing U.S. support for freedom of expression.

The sanctions freeze the North Korean officials' property or interests in the U.S. and ban transactions with U.S. citizens.

Kim Jong-un's reported number two, Choe Ryong-hae, is one of the targets.

But experts see this is a symbolic move considering North Korea is already heavily sanctioned.

Washington and Pyongyang are currently deadlocked in talks over Kim's weapons program.

It was thought a visit by Kim to Seoul this year could help smooth the way for more talks.

But there's no word from North Korea he's preparing to cross the border.
