Seoul rejects N. Korean deception over missile-base report

A new research report suggests North Korea has been developing its missile program amid ongoing peace talks with the United States and South Korea. Seoul has responded, saying the activity in the report does not violate any of the accords reached this year during talks.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies used satellite imagery to locate the undeclared ballistic-missile bases.

The think-tank says it believes North Korea is maintaining more than a dozen sites.

International nuclear experts quickly rebuked media criticism that leader Kim Jong-un is breaking promises he made during summits this year.

Referencing one of the bases, a Seoul government official said Kim never mentioned that base or promised to shut it down.

The official said there's no deception. If anything, he added, this is a sign talks are needed to end North Korea's military threat.

Seoul's defense ministry says North Korea cleared 636 landmines.

The deal to remove landmines from the Joint Security Area, where the two Koreas meet for talks, is part of a broader agreement to demilitarize much of the DMZ.

South Korea also removed landmines on its side of the neutral zone and says it can no longer detect any there.

The North and South also began demolishing concrete guard posts on both sides of the border this week.

The U.S. has raised concerned about the pace of Korean cooperation. Seoul maintains the steps are needed to ease military tensions.

BREXIT DEAL STILL ELUSIVE

UK Prime Minister Theresa May hasn't made enough progress on a Brexit agreement with the EU to hold an emergency cabinet meeting on the issue on Monday.

Negotiations continue, with a solution to the Irish border backstop issue still elusive.

Theresa May's hoping to make a breakthrough within days that she can put to her cabinet, with a view to an EU summit to finalise a Brexit deal later this month.

However, it's reported several cabinet members are considering resigning, with many not believing Mrs May will be able to get whatever agreement she reaches through Parliament.

Opposition Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer says Labour is unlikely to back the Prime Minister's deal.
