Australian government nervous about the Wentworth by-election on Saturday

The Australia government is nervously awaiting the result Saturday's by-election in Sydney's wealthy eastern suburbs, triggered by the resignation of Malcolm Turnbull after he was dumped as Prime Minister, with polls suggesting an independent candidate will snatch the seat.

Royal visit to Australia - day 2 - Dubbo

MAY HEADS TO BRUSSELS WITH BREXIT TALKS STALLED

UK Prime Minister Theresa May will use a summit in Brussels to encourage EU leaders towards a Brexit deal, despite negotiations being stalled.

Talks broke down over the weekend over the issue of a 'backstop' solution to keep the Irish border open if the UK and EU can't reach a trade deal.

Mrs May insists a deal can still be done, but the EU says she needs to bring new ideas to the table to move talks forward.

Britain's due to leave the European Union in March next year.

Former Home Secretary Amber Rudd says she still believes Theresa May is the right person to bring home an agreement.

Protests as 800-year-old Indian temple opens doors to women

Security has been stepped up at an 800-year-old temple in the Indian state of Kerala where menstruating women will be allowed entry for the first time in centuries. 

This comes in the backdrop of a Supreme Court ruling that said that temple authorities cannot keep women devotees out on the grounds that the deity is 'celibate' and hence would be corrupted by the presence of menstruating women who are considered to be 'impure'.

US imposes new sanctions on Iran, saying group recruits child soldiers

Talks at DMZ target reduction of guards, weapons in border area


Military talks were held at the demilitarized zone or DMZ today (Tuesday) as North and South Korea work to demilitarize their border. The United Nations Command was also at the talks and must agree with any plan to reduce guards or remove weapons along the buffer zone.

The meeting was the first in a series of talks between North and South Korea and the United Nations Command.

They discussed an ongoing operation to remove mines from the Joint Security Area, the only spot along the DMZ where negotiations are held.

They also discussed the reduction of guards and weapons from that area.

Seoul and Pyongyang agreed on the plans last month in an effort to maintain peace efforts.

According to South Korea, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has expressed "discontent" with the deal.
