Transgender political candidate makes history in Vermont

America may be on track to elect its first transgender governor after Christine Hallquist, a former energy executive, won a primary election in the state of Vermont.


She'll now face a Republican rival in the battle to secure control of the state this November.

Parkland students return for new school year

WESTMINSTER SUSPECT: 29 YR OLD SALIH KHATER

The suspect arrested in Tuesday's vehicle collision at the UK's Houses of Parliament is being named as Sudanese immigrant Salih Khater.

The 29 year-old British citizen remains in police custody after a car collided with pedestrians and cyclists before crashing into barriers in Westminster.

It's reported he told people he was visiting London to pick up a visa for Sudan.

Counter-terror police are investigating what officers believe was a 'deliberate act'.

39 DEAD AFTER GENOA BRIDGE COLLAPSE

39 people are now known to have died after a motorway bridge collapsed in the Italian city of Genoa.

Searches continue for any potential survivors, after the bridge came down on Tuesday sending vehicles 45m to the ground below.

There are calls in Italy for the bosses of the firm that operates the bridge to resign, amid growing public anger.

MOON: Pyongyang Summit Will be a "Bold Step" Towards Ending Korean War

India to launch universal healthcare scheme in September

On the occasion of India's 72nd Independence Day, the country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his government will launch a universal healthcare scheme by September 25. 

The scheme was first announced earlier this year and aims to provide affordable healthcare to 100 million families in India. The government claims it will be the biggest government funded health scheme globally.

Report details abuse by Catholic priests on 1000 victims over 70 years in Pennsylvania


More than 300 priests have been named in a grand jury report into historic sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the US state of Pennsylvania.

Bus crash kills dozens in Ecuador

Dozens of people have been killed in a bus crash in Ecuador.

Authorities say at least 24 passengers died and 19 were injured when the vehicle they were traveling it overturned on a road near the capital, Quito.

US brands Russia's pursuit of space weapons "disturbing"

The United States has said Russia's pursuit of new space weapons is "disturbing".

At the U.N.'s Conference on Disarmament, the U.S. cited a new mobile laser system to destroy satellites and a new inspector satellite which was acting in an "abnormal" way.
